Deborah Hunt has been a mask maker, mask and object theater performance artist since 1973. A creator of miniatures and giants. A pedagogue of puppetry and mask performance.

Born in New Zealand and residing in Puerto Rico since 1990, she is the founder of Maskhunt Motions, a nomadic, unregistered laboratory for experimental object theatre work. Theatre of the useless.

Maskhunt Motions creates many kinds of masks and objects using various materials, from miniatures to giants, and teaches in communities worldwide. Deborah’s practice is focused on and explores mask work and puppetry in public/private spaces, often performing in unconventional places and to very intimate audiences.

Deborah Hunt was a member of the avant-garde New Zealand performance collective, Red Mole. The collective was founded in the 1970s by the late Alan Brunton and Sally Rodwell. Their shows featured theatre, music, fire-eating, and huge puppets. In Deborah Hunt’s words “We were a little bit like rock and roll theatre.”
