An Exploration in Marionettes with Madison J. Cripps

  • Mayo Street Arts 10 Mayo Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

This workshop consists of two parts. The first is a basic introduction to the string puppet or Marionette. Its parts and the forces that play on the puppet will directly inform the construction of a simple marionette. The second section is a hands on show and tell with specific exercises designed to get the brain and body moving instead of just 'hanging around'.

Suspend your disbelief: learn some knots, attach strings to things for the fun of it, learn through doing. Build a simple marionette. Discover its inherent movement vocabulary. Share with the class to gain greater knowledge of the multitudinous possibilities than one could not achieve in the same amount of time.

Play in a different world: use the working marionettes used in the show to learn how design choices affect movement. Discover relationships of gravity, pendular momentum, active and passive movement, trick strings and simple mechanisms.

***DISCLAMER***

There will be bad puns.
